Chapter 13 - May I have some honey please?

Education

If I were to look for a miracle product it would most likely be honey.  Honey is a special food made by bees to survive a shortage of food during the tough months of winter.  The worker bees, infertile females of the hive, gather a special liquid called nectar from the flowers and store it in a special compartment of their stomachs called honey crop.  Afterwards the nectar is mixed with the enzymes of the bee’s honey stomach so it could be stored for a long time.  Being the only food for the cold months, honey has to be packed with all the essentials elements to sustain life.

Honey is full of antioxidants, enzymes, minerals, vitamins; it contains 22 amino acids, 28 minerals, 11 enzymes, 14 fatty acids and 11 carbohydrates.  When worker bees bring honey to the hive it is already partially digested after a few cycles of ingestion and regurgitation; therefore, It can can last for centuries if stored properly.  To save honey from fermenting the bees have to constantly fan it with their wings.  This process saves our stomachs from bacteria and unnecessary fermentation.  Honey is one of the best sweeteners nature made.  Ayurveda calls honey “madhu” or “perfect sweet” as it can be used practically in anything.  Unlike other sweeteners, when added to an herbal tea or concoction it makes your medicine even more potent. Honey can protect you from seasonal allergies, treat cough, asthma, bronchitis. A cup of lukewarm water mixed with a teaspoon of honey and a half lemon taken in the morning prevents constipation and hyperacidity. Mixed with organic apple cider vinegar and water, honey helps restore pH of the body and reduce inflammation. Honey is incredible for anemia as it helps maintain the right balance of hemoglobin and red blood cells.  It has a long history of use for different eye issues. Having antiseptic and antifungal properties it helps heal wounds, burns and ulcers. Honey mixed with aloe turns this mixture into a magic potion. It can be used for skin and hair, digestion related problems, respiratory problems and  energy, and much-much more. Honey can be very helpful in treating insomnia.

Some famous drinks made from honey are meads and sbiten.  They are delicious and have healing properties as well.  A very special ayurvedic jam made with honey and other herbs rejuvenates the body and restores the energy, removes toxins and increases sexual stamina.

Another incredible combination is honey with cinnamon.  It strengthens immune system, helps people with diabetes, improves digestion, helps with different skin condition. Cinnamon and honey paste can also be used instead of beauty products. For instance, cinnamon can brighten and bleach the skin. This combo could be used as a facial for wrinkles, age spots, blemishes and acne. It can also be used for hair loss and to stimulate its growth.  Mixed with ginger, pepper, cardamom and cinnamon honey can help keep the body warm and treat coughs, colds and other respiratory problems.  Incredible properties of honey can be easily destroyed by heating.  Whenever you add honey to your food or beverage remember to let them cool down before adding honey.

Enjoy your “perfect sweet!”
